When and why did you decide to create Voctave?

Jamey Ray did not intend to create Voctave. In the Summer of 2014, a video was posted of a group singing one of Mr. Ray’s arrangements that got picked up by the Huffington Post and went viral. Eventually, Kirstin Maldonado from Pentatonix connected with him and they collaborated on a Disney Love Medley which was then posted. Afterward, Mr. Ray decided that this should not be a one-off but that an actual a cappella group should come out of this.

What were some of the hardships you faced when you first started Voctave?

Some of the issues that arose when Mr. Ray first started Voctave included knowing what to do and the right people to work with. As a new a capella group trying to tread ground he had to keep in mind what songs to record, when to post videos, what the videos should look like, and what makes a viral video. This was on top of figuring out group dynamics and the recording process.

When it comes to choosing vocalists for the group what is the selection process like?

When selecting group members Jamey Ray chose individuals he had worked with before to some degree and who sounded wonderful individually and would blend well together as a group. Every member offers something unique to the group as a whole. He also stressed the importance of choosing people capable of maintaining positive group dynamics.

What is the process when it comes to selecting and arranging songs for the group?

According to Mr. Ray, when it comes to selecting songs there is no magical process. He has a long list of songs he wants to arrange and waits for the inspiration for a song to come. Before sitting down to start the arrangement Mr. Ray already has an idea of the structure and form of the piece. He also picks songs that showcase the talents of different singers but the inspiration to create the arrangement should still be there.

How was the Voctave impacted by the pandemic and how have you thrived despite it?

The biggest hit to Vocatave during the pandemic was the loss of live performances just when their momentum was picking up. However, they were still able to record 2 albums during the pandemic and this experience has pushed everyone to move forward with Voctave because they feel the group has great potential.

Is there anything else you wish to share in this interview?

“I’m thankful for Voctave and the inspiration that it has given many people. I’m thankful for the collaborations and amazing opportunities the group has gotten over the years. I hope to be able to continue to showcase the amazing talent within the group and inspire other singers.”
