Courageous Creatives Take Back Time Film Premiere & Community Panel Q&A

Sponsored by Culture Shock Miami and led by Miami-based creative and educator, Miriam L. King, Courageous Creatives launched this summer as a safe space for young artists between the ages of 16-22 to participate in complex discussions about social justice and to reimagine change through the arts and activism. This cohort of 24 socially-minded artists and future leaders, collaborated over the course of 5 weeks resulting in the creation of a short-film, charting a path of 526 ways to move towards an equitable and just society.

Jamaica has one of the highest murder rates in the world. But on November 16, 1997, when Jamaica's national soccer team – a.k.a. the 'Reggae Boyz' – qualified for the 1998 World Cup, not a single bullet was fired in the country.

As the Reggae Boyz embark on their 2014 World Cup campaign, an amateur player named 'Tuffy' Anderson dreams of playing on the national team. Tuffy works in a steel factory by day and plays in the local amateur league by night, refusing to give up his dream of one day playing on the national team.

Indie Flicks: Picture Character Presented by SMDCAC

The rapid rise of emoji (Japanese for “picture character”) is a global phenomenon without precedent. Their widespread use and ability to convey complex messages have not only cemented emoji's place as an emerging digital language, but prompted difficult questions about the creation of a language and digital communication’s fraught ties to identity and inclusion. In Picture Character, directors Martha Shane and Ian Cheney lead viewers on a deep dive into the ever evolving world of picture characters, from their humble beginnings in Japan to mobile keyboards the world over. They shed fresh light on the private consortium that approves new emoji offerings and the individuals fighting to make the language more representative of its billions of users. Run time: 79 minutes

Focus on Love Stories Presented by MIAMIsFF

Fall in love with short films at the Deering Estate! On Sunday, March 15th, from 6 to 9 p.m., MIAMIsFF will present "Focus on: Love Stories," a special screening of films from around the world, with a focus on tales of love and all the forms it can take. The experience of love is explored from the perspective of its beginnings and endings, and all the moments in between, in films like In bed and Drive-Thru among others. This program is presented as part of MIAMIsFF's "Focus On" Series, featuring a collection of short films with a particular theme, topic, or "focus." About the program Deering Estate, in partnership with the MIAMI short FILM FESTIVAL (MIAMIsFF), co-presents a series of screenings of selected short films occurring the third Sunday of every other month in the theater of the Visitor Center.

For more information about ScreenDance Miami please visit our website, miamilightproject.com In the Steps of Trisha Brown (2016), USA, 1hr 19m Directed by Marie-Hélène Rebois In the Steps of Trisha Brown takes us behind the scenes in the weeks leading up to the first performance. Brown's work is so complex that it resists standard dance notation, so carrying on her legacy by teaching the surprising, challenging piece to the dancers of the Paris Opera Ballet are choreographer Lisa Kraus, who helped create the original production of Glacial Decoy and danced in it, and Carolyn Lucas, the current Artistic Director of the Trisha Brown Dance Company. Interspersed with fascinating, little-seen archival footage from original productions and of Brown herself in rehearsal, IN THE STEPS OF TRISHA BROWN is both a testament to the value of teaching and studying art and dance, and a privileged look at the process of staging a major dance piece.

ScreenDance Festival Miami 2020 Workshop: Media Draft Lab Presented by Miami Light Project

This workshop is part of ScreenDance Miami Festival 2020, presented by Miami Light Project. For more information about ScreenDance Miami, please visit miamilightproject.com Led by Gabri Christa, Writer/Director/Producer/Choreographer This workshop teaches peers to look at work with the sole purpose of supporting the maker's vision and should leave the creator excited to return to the creation. Feedback tools used come from coaching, counseling, Liz Lerman's Critical response system and Gabri Christa's years of mentoring, teaching and her own experience receiving feedback on her artworks. This Lab is an opportunity for all filmmakers and or multi-media artists, to share their drafts, or small sections of work in the making, with a group of peers in a safe environment. This workshop is also for educators and others who are in positions of giving artistic feedback and want to be more compassionate and effective doing so. Will provide worksheet and tools. Share a link of your work you wish to get feedback on, two days prior to the workshop through dropbox or a google drive.
