Handel: Messiah Presented by Seraphic Fire

PATRICK DUPRE QUIGLEY, CONDUCTOR Handel’s Messiah has been in continuous performance since virtually the day of its premiere. Given its first performance in Dublin, Ireland, Messiah was instantly recognized by audiences and critics alike as a singular piece of music. For the first time since 2004, Seraphic Fire will perform Handel’s complete work. From the excitement of For Unto Us a Child is Born to the magnificence of the Hallelujah Chorus, Messiah is one of the consummate masterpieces of the Baroque canon. Though now most commonly performed at Christmastime, Seraphic Fire will perform the masterwork in April as a tribute to its original composition for the Easter season. Run Time: Approx. 2 hours 45 minutes Join us for a Pre-Concert Conversation one hour before each concert! Seraphic Fire’s Pre-Concert Conversations series is an adult education initiative offered at no additional cost to concertgoers. Seraphic Fire Associate Conductor James K. Bass and other guest lecturers guide audiences through engaging discussions about the musicological and sociological issues surrounding the pieces being performed by the ensemble.

Six of MTT’s 12 Grammy Awards celebrate his explosively fresh interpretations of these symphonic masterpieces. Encounter extraordinary expression by MTT’s side as he explores Mahler’s Fifth Symphony, a rich panorama of life showcasing tender bereavement and beautiful jubilation. Gil Shaham relishes in the vigor and beauty in fellow virtuoso violinist Joseph Boulogne’s Ninth Concerto. Relish in the last glimpse of this season’s Fellows in this formidable finale.

Chamber Music: Schubert Octet Presented by New World Symphony

The final chamber music concert of the season has the New World Symphony Fellows’ talent and exuberance on full display. Franz Schubert’s Octet is inspired by Beethoven, and full of artistry and character that play out like a symphony. The fanfare begins with George Walker’s Music for Brass that blends revered chorales with lively dances. Grammy Award-winner and University of Miami professor Lansing McLoskey describes his “Three Bs” of music not as Bach, Beethoven and Brahms, but Beatles, Bauhaus and Black Flag.
