Frida Presented by Florida Grand Opera

Frida by ROBERT XAVIER RODRIGUEZ
Thursday, March 21 at 8PM
Performance takes place at Miami-Dade County Auditorium

Robert Xavier Rodríguez’s colorful score is a perfect match for the passionate art of the legendary painter Frida Kahlo. Although the artist was wracked by agonizing physical pain and caught up in a stormy marriage to Diego Rivera, the flame that fueled Kahlo’s art just kept burning and never turned to ash. She created fifty-five self-portraits. But no portrait of her is quite as revealing as the one in Rodríguez’s opera.

Turkuaz Presented by The Rhythm Foundation

Turkuaz at the North Beach Bandshell is presented by Live For Live Music in partnership with GMP Live and the Rhythm Foundation. Energetic splashes of funk, alternative, rock, R&B, and psychedelia color the music of Turkuaz. Balancing male-female harmonies, strutting guitars, wild horn arrangements, and interminable grooves, this spirit takes shape in the color donned by each respective member on stage nightly via larger-than-life performances. The Brooklyn-based nonet —Dave Brandwein [guitar, vocals], Taylor Shell [bass], Craig Brodhead [guitar, keys], Michelangelo Carubba [drums], Chris Brouwers [trumpet, keys], Greg Sanderson [tenor sax], Josh Schwartz [baritone sax, vocals], Sammi Garett [vocals], and Shira Elias [vocals]—ignite an explosion of energy punctuated by neon hues, deft musicality, and show-stopping sing-alongs on their fifth full-length album, Life In The City. The album, which includes co-production work from Jerry Harrison of The Talking Heads, sees the band stretch their sonic palette and cover new ground lyrically as they grapple with reality and get personal, finding the light in what can sometimes be a dark world. Yet even in the midst of serious subject matter creeping in on this album, the musicianship of all nine band members and the group’s upbeat, fun-loving sensibility still shines through to give Turkuaz fans the joyous sound they’ve come to know over the last several years.

Of Things Past Presented by Kaleidoscope MusArt

Internationally-acclaimed pianist Jooeun Pak presents Florida premieres of pieces by American composers Cherise Leiter and Caroline Kyunga Ahn, along with works by two of the most beloved composers of all time: Frederic Chopin and George Gershwin. These works are all linked by a remembrance of the past. Cherise Leiter reimagines one of the oldest forms of piano music, one that Chopin himself had revolutionized and mastered, in her 6 Etudes for piano. The nostalgic element continues with “Water Image, Reflection, and Memories” by Caroline Kyunga Ahn, the title of which invokes the theme of finding one’s own reflection in the past. In Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue, American music found a new voice through the melding of things past and current; classical tradition with pioneering jazz. Few pieces evoke such nostalgia as this work, which calls us back to the golden era of the Roaring Twenties and the Jazz Age.
