Jazz Roots: British Invasion - Latin Style Presented by Arsht Center

The 12th anniversary season of JAZZ ROOTS begins with a Latin and British musical mix starring JOSÉ FELICIANO, ARTURO SANDOVAL, TIM RIES, LUCY WOODWARD, KATE REID, FANTINE, and SHELLY BERG featuring the HENRY MANCINI INSTITUTE ORCHESTRA. The evening will also serve as a welcome to the new JAZZ ROOTS presenting partner, EFG International. The concert is an exciting twist on British-influenced jazz with new arrangements and orchestrations of The Beatles, Sting and more. Legendary nine-time GRAMMY® Award winner JOSÉ FELICIANO joins this all-star lineup opening the 2019-20 Jazz Roots season. Synonymous with an international presence that has influenced popular music for more than two generations, Feliciano is recognized as the first Latin artist to cross over into the English market. He has been awarded over 45 Gold and Platinum records, earch 19 GRAMMY nominations and won 9 GRAMMY awards, as well as received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Kennedy Center. This start-studded season opener also features ARTURO SANDOVAL, a protégé of the legendary jazz master Dizzy Gillespie and one of the world’s most acknowledged guardians of jazz trumpet. SANDOVAL has been awarded 10 GRAMMY® Awards, 19 GRAMMY® nominations, six Billboard Awards, an Emmy Award and the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Joining FELICIANO and SANDOVAL that evening will be London native LUCY WOODWARD whose performances USA Today hails as “a string-kissed slice of retro British pop by a versatile singer/songwriter”; vocalist KATE REID; multilingual artist FANTINE; and Steinway piano artist and multi-GRAMMY® nominated arranger and producer SHELLY BERG.

The Persistence of Memory Presented by Kaleidoscope MusArt

Much like Dalí’s painting of the same name, The Persistence of Memory suggests a melding of time, exploring musical dialogues across history. Through György Kurtág’s transcriptions of Bach's works, this program forms an arch linking one of the most significant composers alive today to one of the most significant composers to ever live. Works by Schubert and Mozart showcase threads of vocally-inspired and dramatically-driven pianism in the Austrian tradition. Performers: Naoko Takao & Kenneth Slowik (piano). Program: J.S. Crumb's Cosmos III Presented by Kaleidoscope MusArt

Crumb’s Cosmos III is the final concert in Kaleidoscope MusArt’s concert triptych honoring George Crumb’s 90th birthday. The program features the winning compositions of KMA's Call for Scores. While the first two concerts in the series presented one of Crumb’s most influential and monumental works, the MAKROKOSMOS cycle, the final concert showcases his global influence on the younger generations of composers through seven chamber music works selected via our call for scores. Works by Taylor Brook (U.S.A), Jean-Pascal Chaigne (France), Alice Hunter (U.K.), Marco Longo (Italy), Tianyi Wang (China), Frej Wedlund (Sweeden), and Fabian Zeidler (Germany. Back Yard Bash VI Presented by SMDCAC

Our annual season kickoff is one of the best parties in Miami, a FREE, family-friendly celebration of culture, community and music. Classic Albums Live will be performing Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' classic album Damn the Torpedoes, note for note, cut for cut, playing beloved hits like “Refugee” and “Don’t Do Me Like That." In addition to Classic Albums Live, we will be featuring artists Albert Castiglia and Host DJ Le Spam! Miami based DJ Le Spam, founder of Spam Allstars, is also known for his eclectic vinyl collection. Born in Montreal, and raised in London and Bogota, he was exposed to a variety of music and cultures from an early age. He specializes in rare and hard to find music. His expansive collection includes Latin, Funk, Miami-bass, Haitian, Jazz, and more. Albert Castiglia has been making his living as a bluesman for 20 years, coming to prominence as lead guitarist for the legendary Junior Wells. He's played with a who's who of blues greats in his career and stepped out on his own in 2002 with Burn, an album that got universal raves.

Ranky Tanky Presented by SMDCAC

Dedicated to the African roots music of the Gullah culture of the coastal lowlands and sea islands of Georgia and South Carolina, Ranky Tanky (“get funky” in Gullah patois) has received numerous raves since their debut album “overflowing with authenticity” (Afropop Worldwide) came out in 2017. Powerhouse vocalist Quiana Parler (a 2003 American Idol standout) fronts an accomplished jazz quartet of fellow Charleston musicians and longtime friends, performing gutsy spirituals, blues, songs and more that mark the endurance and beauty of African-American culture.

Nella Presented by SMDCAC

A captivating new international musical talent, Nella is a Venezuelan native trained at the Berklee College of Music and a protégé of legendary flamenco artist/producer Javier Limon, who's performed with Latin pop stars Alejandro Sanz, Carlos Vives and Susana Baca. She joins us on her first U.S. tour, bringing her luminous, soulful sound and a mix of original and Venezuelan and Andalusian folk songs from her debut solo album.

Raul Midón’s Homecoming Concert Presented by Frost Music Live

turns a guitar into an orchestra and his voice into a chorus," singer and songwriter Raul Midón returns to his alma mater for a solo appearance. Expect selections from his most recent Grammy-nominated albums If You Really Want, featuring the Metropole Orkest directed by Vince Mendoza as well as Bad Ass and Blind, a showcase of his highly personal blend of pop, jazz, soul, and funk.
