In 1999, a young Cuban refugee, Elián Gonzalez, was found on the shores of Florida clinging to life. We know the story ends with a boy in a closet, a gun pointed at him; but few of us know how it got to that moment. With the help of key players, new information has been uncovered that paints a more complete and accurate picture of how we got to that moment. This fast-paced, energetic, and emotionally charged play, revisits an event that left its mark on our community and our country.

From the stages of the lower east side to the bright lights of Broadway, L’Chaim: A Toast to the Jewish Legacy of Broadway is a musical journey that pays tribute to the Jewish legacy of musical theatre by exploring and celebrating the unique role of Jewish composers and lyricists from Irving Berlin to the Gershwins, Kander & Ebb, Bock & Harnick, to Stephen Schwartz and Stephen Sondheim. The African American student living in Miami Dade County, Florida during the 1980's – 1990’s was faced with unique challenges in a period that experienced significant cultural, social, political, economic and technological changes that impacted their learning, careers and decision-making capacity. These experiences played a major role in their adulthood. Carol City experienced an influx of migrants primarily from the Caribbean, particularly Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, Haiti, Santo Domingo and Cuba during the 1980’s. The assimilation with African Americans in middle and high school were at times turbulent and dynamic as relationships developed that resulted in shared cultural experiences and at times hostilities. The assimilation of these culturally difference norms and behaviors are rarely captured in the experiences of Africans in the diaspora. These relationships produced the development of a unique cultural artistic climate and social dynamics that is captured in the Three Act, six scenes play.

“The Opponent” written by Brett Neveu and directed by Lowell Williams looks at the hardscrabble world of boxing from the perspective of a small-time boxing gym owner, the seen-it-all-and-then-some Tremont “Tre” Billiford (Enrique Galan) and a young up-and-comer, the charismatic and fast-moving Donell Fuseles (Kedar Myers). The play explores difficult truths revealed as questions of loyalty, dreams deferred, and fractured losses that become unearthed. Tensions quickly rise between the two broken men as both accuse the other of causing the failures that define their lives while approaching the inevitable fight that will ultimately prove who truly is the champ.

Picnic de Libros is a bilingual, family day program featuring storytelling, theatre, music, arts and crafts, dance, and picnic baskets full of books, free to keep. The event is free and its main goal is to expose kids to the richness and variety of the cultural traditions in our diverse community. These gatherings will tickle children’s curiosity while using the power of stories to bring people together, promoting literacy, and nurturing the next generation of engaged world citizens. We want to encourage kids to read and develop a passion for books and literature. Culminating each day, we will serve a special picnic with blankets on the lawn and baskets full of books, in both Spanish and English, to take home. Picnic de Libros is produced by the Koubek Center and Fundacion Cuatrogatos, with the support of Miami Book Fair.
