Flamenco Festival Miami XV: Ballet Nacional de España Presented by Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County

For 45 years, Ballet Nacional de España (BNE) has been bringing the history of Spanish dance to life while remaining true to the nation’s spirit of innovation and artistry. The company’s repertoire includes classic 20th century works as well as bold new choreographies such as Invocación, a program created by BNE director Rubén Olmo that salutes past masters of the castanet-driven style known as Escuela Bolera. The company will perform Invocación and several other original works that combine flamenco, ballet and stylized dance during its Flamenco Festival appearance. This year’s festival celebrates the legacy of Paco de Lucia.

While staying faithful to the original text, Sahid incorporates flamenco elements of cante and cajón as part of the setting to complement the powerful and passionate performances of a group of international actors. "The House of Bernarda Alba" invites you to explore the fight for freedom and expression in a rigid society. 5th Annual Forward Motion Physically Integrated Dance Festival Presented by MDCA

Karen Peterson and Dancers presents the Fifth Edition of the Forward Motion Dance Festival with dance performances played live by The Spirit of the Goodwill Band Musicians and Singers as well as guest choreographers and dancers, Julie Crothers from San Francisco, Pawel Karpinski from Poland, guest choreographer Mark Travis from Atlanta as well as home grown, Karen Peterson and Dancers. This performance provides the best work of national and international dancers who create and perform under the umbrella of physically integrated dance.

Dance NOW! Program II featuring "Gli Altri/The Others" with Opus Ballet Presented by Dance Now! Miami

The advent of spring can mean just one thing – the return of Compagnia Opus Ballet (COB), direct from Florence, Italy, for a new performance with Florida’s own Dance Now! Miami (DNM). The two ensembles will share the stage of the Miami Theater Center in Miami Shores. The afternoon will include a new, joint version of “Gli Altri/The Others,” the critically acclaimed social commentary on identities of marginalized people. The performance will also include an encore of DNM’s “(B)orgia,” their take on the Italian power family, and the Miami premiere of COB’s “The White Room” (excerpts), inspired by the paintings of Giovanni Segantini.

Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater Presented by Adrienne Arsht Center

The groundbreaking company returns with new and classic works, including founder Alvin Ailey’s masterpiece Revelations, the “Ailey gift that somehow keeps on giving” (The New York Times). Celebrating its 65th anniversary season, the company will perform three shows in the Ziff Ballet Opera House. These will include new works commissioned specifically for Ailey: Amy Hall Garner’s rousing, high-spirited tribute to her grandfather, CENTURY; Elizabeth Roxas-Dobrish’s dreamlike reminiscence of romance, Me, Myself and You; new productions of Ronald K. Brown’s Dancing Spirit, Jamar Roberts’ Ode and Solo by Hans van Manen; and, as always, Alvin Ailey’s timeless triumph Revelations, which has been moving audiences for decades with its powerful storytelling and soul-stirring music. Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater never fails to remind us of the power of dance to bring people together. With their trademark brilliance and passionate energy, these dancers bring the audiences to their feet at every performance. Learn choreography from Revelations and see the award-winning Florida Memorial University marching band! Before the Friday night performance on February 2, we will celebrate the extraordinary legacy of Alvin Ailey and the African American cultural experience through a pre-show activation on the plaza in partnership with BOMA (Black Owned Media Alliance). Beginning at 6:00 p.m., Step Into Dance – A Tribute to Black History Month will feature a Revelations workshop where the community can learn choreography from the masterpiece followed by performances from the Florida Memorial University marching band, drumline, dance and step teams. Admission to the pre-show activation is free with a ticket to that evening's performance.

Bijayini Satpathy in ABHIPSAA - a seeking Presented by Live Arts Miami

Considered one of the foremost masters of Odissi in the world, Bijayini Satpathy is renowned the world over for her grace and she embodies the spirit and profound storytelling of classical Indian dance in a way few others have achieved. Now, in the prime of her artistic life, Satpathy embarks on a journey to expand the tradition through her own choreographic work. After 25 years as Principal Dancer with India’s famed Nrityagram Dance Ensemble, Satpathy strikes out on her own to create this singular solo work that radically integrates Odissi’s past and proposes its possible futures. In this evening – length choreographic debut, Satpathy reimagines classical Odissi forms through a personalized interpretation that charts a journey of discovery in physical, emotional, and spiritual realms. This critical success, a dramatic exploration and reshaping of an ancient tradition, has catapulted Satpathy to the forefront of the field. Satpathy has been hailed by New Yorker Magazine for her “exquisite grace and technique” and by international press around the world for her unparalleled artistic expression.
